Directional Couplers
The directional coupler provides a simple means of monitoring or sampling RF energy. The coupling value (i.e. 20 dB) is the amount of power diverted to the coupled output from the main line. The “main line” power is reduced by a like amount (i.e. 0.044 dB for a 20 dB coupler). The directivity indicates the degree to which the coupled port is isolated from the main line load. The insertion loss specified includes the losses due to coupling. The internal termination determines the power handling capability of the coupler particularly with mismatched “main line” loads.
